Delivery of the fast-tracked Kangaroo Point Green Bridge is about to get underway, with hundreds of local workers to get started on piecing together the longest inner-city active travel bridge in any Australian capital city.

Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said residents would soon see establishment of the work sites in the CBD and at Kangaroo Point, with barges to arrive and marine piling to start in early 2022.

“This bridge is going to a major engineering and construction feat for our city and involve innovative techniques that have never been used in Brisbane before,” Cr Schrinner said.

“The construction of this green bridge will involve the best and most advanced construction techniques to ensure river access is maintained while 33 piles are installed, and the 182-metre bridge span connected.

“The Kangaroo Point Green Bridge will be the tallest bridge in Brisbane with its mast 95-metres above the Brisbane River, and we will use a combination of a 72-metre tower crane and barges to install the main pylon before installing the bridge deck spans across the river.

“This bridge is about providing better and safer active travel connections, but it’s also going to be a fantastic landmark for the 2032 Olympics and Paralympic Games.

“The combination of its striking design, boutique bar and restaurant and the critical connection from the heart of the CBD across to the main Olympic Stadium will make it incomparable to anything else in the world.

“I have no doubt it will quickly become one of the most photographed structures in Brisbane.”

Transport Civic Cabinet Chair Councillor Ryan Murphy said the Kangaroo Point Green Bridge would be city changing

“The Schrinner Council said we would fast-track this green bridge and the fact that we’re about to start early works is another milestone met,” Cr Murphy said.

“The construction plan and animation will let residents know exactly how this bridge will be built and what they can expect to see happening.

“The innovative approach to construction will use three major deck lifts to install the main spans, allowing safe access to the river to be maintained.

“This bridge will be built locally by a team of more than 300 contractors and more than 90 per cent of supplies will be sourced from South East Queensland businesses.

“We’ve come a long way in the just over two years since the Lord Mayor first announced the Green Bridges program and we are now getting ready to build this landmark bridge.”

Completion of the Kangaroo Point Green Bridge is expected in late 2023.
