As the number of Ukrainians fleeing Russian president Vladimir Putin’s invasion of their country topped 3.7 million this week, a number of global construction firms have weighed in with support.
Dutch consultant Arcadis has donated €1m to the Red Cross, Unicef and Polish Humanitarian Action, and is match-funding donations by its employees.
The company told GCR it has also established a volunteering process for employees to help Ukrainians, and will expand refugee employment programmes already underway in Poland and Romania. It has also joined some 50 major corporations including Amazon, Unilever and Pfizer in supporting the Tent Partnership for Refugees.
Dallas-headquartered Aecom says it will match-fund public donations up to $100,000 to give to the Ukraine relief funds of the American National Red Cross and Save the Children Federation. If the target is hit, the two charities would split the $200,000 raised. Public donations reached $37,000 on Friday, 25 March.
Spain’s Ferrovial launched its “Stronger Together for Ukraine”, pledging also to match public donations, with no stated upward limit, to help internally displaced Ukrainians and those taking sheltering in neighbouring countries.
“The refugee crisis isn’t just a problem for governments and nonprofits to solve,” said Tent Partnership founder Hamdi Ulukaya. “Businesses have a responsibility to be part of the solution, bringing their innovation, their resources, and their voice to support displaced people around the world.”
