A new home for the Cleve gym and Cleve Cricket Club is on its way with construction planned to be complete by the end of June.

The gym, currently run from the old football change rooms at the Cleve Oval, has been looking to expand for years.

Over the past three years the Cleve Sporting Bodies have been focusing on funding a rebuild of their storm-damaged clubrooms, with plans for a gym expansion put on the backburner.

However the organisation was able to apply for the construction of a larger shed for the gym as part of the Cleve District sporting groups’ application for the federal drought funding.

The building will incorporate an 18×9 metre space for the gym including a disabled toilet, and a 9×3 metre space for the Cleve cricket club and an open area for barbecues.

Gym chairperson Kathy Quinn said the larger space would approximately double the gym’s capacity, which can currently hold about ten people comfortably.

Mrs Quinn said the gym has about 80-90 members from a wide range of age groups, and was an important facility to keep the community active beyond sport.

“It’s more for your wellbeing I think… it keeps us moving,” she said.

Mrs Quinn said the gym provided older community members an opportunity to exercise that was less dependent on good weather than walking or golf.

With few similar facilities available outside regional centres on the Eyre Peninsula, she said she hoped the expansion could assist in bringing health services on board, using the exercise equipment to assist clients in rehabilitation.

While construction is planned to conclude before the end of June, a date has not been set for the relocation of equipment.
