THE construction industry could “gradually open” next Friday (September 3) following a final safety check from the ACT chief health officer in the middle of the week, says Chief Minister Andrew Barr.

“Feedback we’re getting from the sector is that they’re committed to enacting the strictest covid safe arrangements that would enable a staged reopening of construction,” he says.

The commencement will be gradual and will begin with civil construction such as new roads and infrastructure, as well as the manufacturing, fabrication, testing and equipment supply that will enable construction projects to recommence, he says.

“Large scale construction projects on large site footprints will also be involved in this work,” he says.

A strict set of covid safety requirements will be sent to industry stakeholders today, and Mr Barr says Worksafe ACT and ACT police will enforce these requirements.
