Cellar door a must for one Southern Tasmanian winery while another upgrades an old shearing shed

Popular winemaker Fred Peacock has been part of the scenery at Bream Creek for more than three decades and the cellar door plan was put on hold as the pandemic caused lockdowns.

Now almost two years on Fred Peacock says in hindsight he wished he’d pushed on with the construction of the cellar door as Covid has caused major shortages in the building and timber industries.

Finding builders to tender for the project has been tough and supplies of construction material have been also affected by the flurry of activity in Tasmania’s housing sector.

On the banks of the Derwent River at Granton a new version of the old shearing shed on the Derwent Estate Vineyard is starting to take shape as an extension of the current historic cellar door.

Vigneron Andrew Hanigan says he’s had two experienced builders on the payroll for the past two years upgrading other buildings at the vineyard, and they’re now working on the shearing shed.

The plan is for the new building , a function centre and an extension to the cellar door, to open in March in time for the first booking which happens to be a wedding for one of the builders.
